Lilly Grace... Quarter of a Year

Lilly Grace...I cannot believe I got to hold you in my arms for the first time 3 months ago today (April 5, 2016)!  I cannot put into words all the ways you have positively changed my life.  I prayed for a little girl like you for many years! No one knows you better than me.  Besides that, you know what my heart sounds like from the inside!

Your daddy picked out your name.  We had discussed a few of our favorites, but decided to wait until we saw you to make our decision.  As soon as your daddy saw you in the operating room, he looked at me and said "she looks like a Lilly".  Once I got back to our room from recovery, your daddy told me where he picked out your name.  I was thinking it was because your great-grandmother's name on your daddy's side was Lily, but I was incorrect.  He got your name from the Bible where Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount and his parable on Anxiety.  We are to be like Lilies and have faith that God will take care of us.  Your middle name is because of God's great grace he has so willing given us, even though we are undeserving.

The Cure for Anxiety (AMP Version)

25 “Therefore I tell you, stop being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the harvest] nor gather [the crops] into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by worrying can add one [l]hour to [the length of] his life? 28 And why are you worried about clothes? See how the lilies and wildflowers of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin [wool to make clothing], 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive and green today and tomorrow is [cut and] thrown [as fuel] into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 Therefore do not worry or be anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted), saying, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32 For the [pagan] Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; [but do not worry,] for your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.
34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Your daddy and I both love you VERY much!  We decided that, in your life, we want to you experience many things.  Food, cultures, traveling, theatre, museums, languages, etc.  We are doing our best to provide this for you.  Please don't be upset that we do not want you to accumulate many material possessions.  We feel that you will benefit more from experiences than some toy or material possession that was purchased and then soon forgotten.

Before you were 1 month old, we took you to southern Georgia and Florida to visit your daddy's family.  It was a REALLY long drive (2200 miles round trip) and you were excellent!  Your trip included traveling through most of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee.  You did sleep through most of the driving, but we took pictures along the way.  We always take you to restaurants and hope that you will have a palate for all types of foods!

Right after you turned 1 month old, your daddy had to leave for a work project.  We were fortunate enough to be able to visit him for a few days.  Driving to see him added 2 more states for you...Maryland and Pennsylvania.  This brings your total to 9 states traveled through.  You had already been in Pennsylvania two previous times when we took daddy to the Pittsburgh International Airport and then to pick him up.  You did not really enjoy your time in Pennsylvania.  I am not sure if it was the location/environment or just being out of your routine.  You cried a lot and didn't want to sleep.

Before turning 3 months old, I decided that we should visit your daddy's family again, plus it was Easter.  Daddy couldn't get time off work to go with us, so I booked us a flight rather than attempting a 15 hour drive with you all by myself.  You did excellent on all the planes.  Flying and some turbulence didn't seem to phase you one bit!  Everyone complimented you on what a beautiful and good little girl you are.  I agreed with them completely!  On our first flight from Pittsburgh to Charlotte, you discovered your hands and you were intrigued with them most of the flight.  You love to see what all you can do with these new found hands!  You will take your paci/chupon in and out of your mouth, play with your rattles, etc.  You are starting to discover your feet as more than just those objects at the end of your legs, which you LOVE to kick!

Your Aunt Christy's boss, Kenny, picked us up from the Jacksonville International Airport and drove us to Waycross.  Nana had to work 2nd shift, so we had a girls day with Aunt Christy, Kaylee, Jessica, and Jordan Rylee where we went to Kaylee's batting practice.

Friday, we drove to Fargo, GA to the Stephen C. Foster State Park, which is 17 miles into the Okefenokee Swamp.  We spent the weekend here.  Since it was your very first Easter, Aunt Christy said that this will now be our annual tradition.  Nana, Aunt Christy, Uncle David, Zachary, Austin, Jared, and Kaylee all loved on you.

Sunday, we met up with Papa and Lola Lisa.  We really wish we could have spent more time with them before having to fly back home EARLY Monday morning.  We went out to eat and then you spent the rest of the evening getting lots of snuggles.

Arriving back to Pittsburgh
Aunt Kimmie taught you to "ride a bike".  During diaper changes, you especially love to kick your legs.  When asked if you are riding your bike to go see daddy, you kick them even faster and harder!

Your daddy is still away for work and we miss him terribly.  It has been a month and a half since we have seen him.  Hopefully he gets home to us soon!!

Your Pappy is watching you while mommy is at work and he absolutely loves watching you every day.  NanNan is retiring in June so she can be home to watch you everyday also.

Do you feel like God has forgotten about you?

This was a question that I was asked while on a mission trip to Haiti back in September.  What a loaded question!

Our group had been working at the OK Corral and for our lunch break we sat and ate with the young men who are in the Men’s Discipleship program with Heartline Ministries.  (You can learn more about this here.  http://heartlineministries.org/mens-bakery-discipleship/)   The first day, we (the American’s) were asking the men all sorts of questions, including topics such as, daily routine, how they heard about Heartline, hobbies, family/work life, etc.  The next day, the Haitian men started asking us the questions.  As they were asking us pretty basic “getting to know you” questions, they discovered that 3 of us ladies are single and in our upper 20s and myself enjoying my 30s.  It is a huge cultural difference for them and they were intrigued.  In Haiti, as well as many other less developed countries, women do not work or hold value outside of the home.  They marry, run the household, and rear the children.  So to see (older) women, who hold careers, are not married, and do not have children is totally new to them.  They then asked us if we felt as if God has forgotten about us since we are unmarried and childless.

The single ladies and the Heartline Men's Discipleship

This was a very difficult question for me to answer as it is something that I have been struggling with for some time and is very personal to me.  It isn’t something that I have chosen to share (until now) and I didn’t really know the audience well enough to share such a sensitive matter.  I was trying to figure out a way to politely excuse myself to avoid answering the question.  I couldn’t figure out an escape route, so I begrudgingly answered their question.

At times, I have felt that God has forgotten about me.  However, my prayers have been plentiful on this subject so I just figured God was ignoring me!  They say that God is in the “wait” and that he answers EVERY prayer.  His answers are “Yes”, “No”, and “Not yet”.  I have been in the “wait” for over a decade, praying earnestly.  I kept telling myself that I am in the “wait” and I just need to be patient and not rush things because God has the perfect husband for me out there…somewhere.  He just isn’t ready to meet me yet!  Don’t get me wrong…I didn't stay hidden in my apartment with my nose in my Bible anticipating my future husband to come knocking on my door!

I was very active.  Not actively seeking a husband, but placing myself in social settings where one could possibly meet a spouse.  Apparently, I just look for love in all the wrong places!  In the past decade, I have discovered MANY places my future husband is NOT!  He is not in the grocery store, gym, volleyball club, bars (highly do NOT recommend this and I did not actively search here.), church, foreign countries, or social networking sites.  He wasn’t at WAKA kickball, or co-ed softball either.  I have a hard and fast rule to not get involved with co-workers, so that was never an option.

Last fall, I read a book by Judah Smith titled “Jesus is ______.”  I heard Judah speak at the Women of Faith Conference in Washington, D.C. in August 2013.  It was a very easy read and my favorite part of the entire book was where he wrote about The Death of Lazarus in John 11.  Lazarus, Mary, and Martha were very dear friends of Jesus and he loved them very much.  Judah pointed out that as Christ followers, we are loved just as much as they were.  My prayers changed slightly to: “Jesus, this is Jen, the one YOU love!”  I still did not feel as though God had forgotten about me.

I’m not going to lie, it is very frustrating (and hurts my soul) to constantly be asked why I’m not married, don’t have children, etc.  The questions often come across as if I have no real value on this earth since I do not have a husband or children.  And I guess in some of their minds, I must have all the free time in the world.  Yes, some men and women choose to be single and childless, but there are also others out there who long for it greatly.  Be sensitive, please.

My women’s small group just completed Breaking Free by Beth Moore.  I discovered that my 2 largest areas of bondage are my singleness/childlessness and captivity of activity.  On week 6 of the 10 week study, we read out of the book Song of Songs.  What a beautiful love story between us and God.  I highly recommend reading this and falling more in love with God.  It is amazing to see how he views us as his Bride.  Another passage in this book that resonated with me is from the third chapter, verses 1-4.  “While in bed at night, I reached for the one I love with heart and soul.  I looked for him, but he wasn’t there.   So I searched through the town for the one I love.  I looked on every street, but he wasn’t there.  I even asked the guards patrolling the town, ‘Have you seen the one I love so much?’   Right after that, I found him.  I held him and would not let go until I had taken him to the home of my mother.”  This is not about searching for a man here on earth, but seeking God and allowing him to meet our every need.

Please do not take this post as if I am complaining or feel as though I am looking for attention and for people to feel sorry for me.  This is just me expressing my thoughts on my specific singleness.  I do feel as though I have many positive qualities to be a bride/mother, but I am first called to follow Christ…wherever that may lead!  While I was living in Richmond, I wrote down a list of qualities/characteristics I am looking for in a husband.  I thought I found that man a couple years ago, but I was incorrect.  I haven’t seen any evidence supporting a change in my list since I first wrote it back in 2010.  I am not being “picky” and I will not settle just so I can be married and have a family.  I would much rather be single and happy than married and miserable.

I do have my fears (disadvantages) of being single…FOREVER.  Some of them include being alone (it’s a good thing I am great company and a superb entertainer!), not having anyone to care for me in times of old age, hurt and/or sickness.  The inability to share my life with a husband and children.  There is also the lack of physical intimacy.  However, I have also compiled a list of advantages to living a life of singleness.  I will never have to go through the pains of a divorce, experience the loss of a child, and never have to worry about relational arguments.  It allows me the freedom to travel and spend my time/money where and how I see fit.  I am also able to spend time volunteering, leading small groups, and mentoring others.  By being single, I have the ability to devote my time, energy, and resources into God’s will.  In 1 Corinthians 7:8; 34b-35 Paul says, “Here is my advice for people who have never been married and for widows. You should stay single, just as I am.  Unmarried women and women who have never been married worry only about pleasing the Lord, and they keep their bodies and minds pure. But a married woman worries about the things of this world, because she wants to please her husband.  What I am saying is for your own good—it isn’t to limit your freedom. I want to help you to live right and to love the Lord above all else.”
As you can see from a list I quickly compiled, the benefits of living in singleness far outweigh the fears and disadvantages.

I guess, what I have really come to realize is that God has answered my prayer.  I thought his answer was “Not yet” and I was anxiously awaiting when it would be my time.  This morning as I was in the shower, I realized that God has answered my prayer about having a spouse.  He has told me “No”.  I will honestly say that it is not the answer that I wanted, and probably why I have held on to my prayer for 10 years!  I also had the voice from a former relationship telling me "No one will want you.  You are damaged goods!" in the back of my head and I really didn't want to believe him.  I will remain faithful to Him and follow Him wherever he leads me.  He must have an amazing legacy that I am supposed to leave…or he would not have called me to the places I have gone and experienced the seasons that I have in my life to this point.  It is not the current desire of my heart, but I greatly desire to know God.  The more I intimately know Him, my desires will ultimately become His.

I will leave you with a couple pictures.  The first one is me in my "Never gonna happen" dress, and the others are my "Never gonna wear it" diamond ring.

San Valentine...una día de amor

It's been a while, so here is a blog post about my Valentine's Day.

I haven't celebrated Valentine's Day for almost a decade!  I feel we should tell those we love that they are important and special to us every day, not just on February 14th!  (another reason might be because I haven't had anyone in my life to spend Valentine's day with...but I digress)

This winter has been SO cold!  I haven't minded the snow as much as the cold weather!  Most of this past winter was sub-freezing and many days sub-zero temperatures.  I decided to "treat" myself this Valentine's day.  I decided to buy myself a right hand diamond ring.  It is something I have been wanting for some time but kept talking myself out of it.  The ring that I chose has a special meaning to me.  Until now, the only other person who knows the meaning is the salesman at the jewelry store.  I bought an infinity diamond ring.  I've been struggling with a few things in my personal life and it was becoming overwhelming.  (truth be told, God and I were in one of our arguments again...and, like always, he won!)

During some prayer and reflection, I was reminded again of God's Love, Grace, Patience, Acceptance, and Understanding of me.  It is INFINITE!  I went to the jewelry store and picked out the ring and ordered it.  Waiting for it to come in seemed to take forever.  I enjoy wearing this ring because when I look down at my right ring finger I am reminded of God's love for me and that he is infinite.  Some might think it is silly.  I strive to be as humble as I can, but sometimes it is nice to have a little piece of materialism to look at to remind you of how AWESOME our God is...yesterday, today, and forever.

I also found this cute paw print necklace.  It was on clearance and I thought it would be nice to have a piece of jewelry to remind me of all the unconditional love my dog, Jasper, has given me the past 8 years.

My wonderful cousin, Amy, has done a great job at making me feel special.  I will randomly receive flowers from her with a note saying that she loves me and was thinking of me.  This past Valentine's Day was no different.  I honestly was not anticipating a gift of any kind for Valentine's Day.  The receptionist at work buzzed me and asked me to come downstairs.  I had NO idea why.  I was thinking an issue with our credit card machine or a customer wanted to speak with someone in the accounting department.  It was a pleasant surprise to see the beautiful bouquet of flowers awaiting me.  I was a bit puzzled when I read the card because there was no name listed.  My dog is the only male in my life so by simple process of elimination, I figured it had to be from Amy.  Thanks, Amy, for always loving me and making me feel special.  I appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

So, if you have been following me on Facebook and saw the photogrid I posted about my Valentine's Day, here is the back story.

"I want you to know all about Christ's love, although it is too wonderful to be measured.  Then your lives will be filled with all that God is." ~ Ephesians 3:19

"I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love -- not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below.  Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!" ~ Romans 8:38-39

Look at ME!

It has been quite a while since I last blogged.  It was too difficult to blog from Haiti and we were so busy.  My life got a little crazy upon returning to the states.  I promise to update on that and other excursions since then... but not this post.

I moved back to West Virginia right before my birthday in October.  A position at a company that I had been networking with for a few years finally had an opening for an Accountant and Fulfillment Manager.  The VP/CFO contacted me directly to see if I was still interested in the position and returning to my home state.  A couple phone calls and some salary negotiation and I was turning in my notice at my current position, putting my house back on the market (it was off the market for maybe 48 hours!) and planning my move back home.  In less than 2 weeks I was back in WV starting my new job.  I moved back with my clothes, dog, and cat in tow.

My parents have so graciously allowed me to move back into my bedroom at their house until my house in Virginia sells.  Carrying the mortgage makes renting or buying here impossible.  Keeping the thought that "this is only temporary" in the forefront of my mind, I was not unpacking or organizing my clothes in my room.  I felt that it would be wasted effort.  That as soon as I got everything unpacked and organized, my house would sell and I would have to repack everything.  After about a month, I was going CRAZY!  Everything had a place at my house and was organized.  I couldn't take it any more.  I am only slightly more organized than I was...because I have no room for anything!

I was also getting cross contaminated (glutened) and was not feeling well.  I was becoming very irritable and short with everyone.  It was not personal, so I apologize if you fell victim.  I went back to my house in VA to gather up some of my kitchen belongings....mixing bowls, plates, bowls, glasses, silverware, etc hoping to eliminate, or at least decrease the cross contamination.  My mom has been a real trooper learning how to prepare gluten free meals.  She gets overwhelmed at times because she forgets about how the tiniest slip up can cause me hours of pain.

After Christmas, I realized that I was angry with God.  (Did I just type that?!?!)  I have been doing my very best to go where he leads and I was getting frustrated with my house not selling, living with my parents after being on my own for 13 years, and just losing patience with my prayers being unanswered...in my timing.  I threw a temper tantrum like a small child in a candy store.  I was keeping my faith (at least in my mind), but my prayer life wasn't the same.  It has been on the upswing since my childish outburst and slowly getting back on track.

I was standing in church during worship last Sunday and Adam, our worship leader, was talking about a new song we were about to sing.titled "Oceans" by Hillsong United.  He referenced a story in Matthew 14 where he walked on water as did Peter.  (you can read the story here http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2014:22-33 ) Peter had faith to step out of the boat and walk towards Jesus.  As long as he kept his eyes on him, he was fine.  He began to look away and think about other things and he started to sink and became frightened.  This song spoke so strongly to my heart that day as if Jesus himself were standing in front of me, encouraging me to keep looking at HIM.  He was not scolding me for my childish outburst, but comforting me and encouraging me that as long as I keep my focus on him, everything will work out the way it should.  Please click on the link to listen to the song.
How awesome is it that our Father loves us this much?!  It doesn't matter how many times we fail, he is always waiting for us with his arms wide open, welcoming us back.

This was the breath of fresh air I was so desperately needing.  Thank you, God.

2013 Travels to date.

Well, I've made a few short trips since my last post and have been doing my best to make positive changes in my life.

A week or so after my last post, I was in a car accident.  Thankfully, everyone was ok.  My car sustained a couple thousand dollars in damage, though.  Below are pictures of my damaged car and then how great Collision One did with the repairs so I could still make my college roommate ski weekend in Snowshoe, WV!

The damage...
All fixed!!  :)

I met up with one of my college roommates and her husband to begin our ski weekend.  It was some MUCH needed time catching up with Charity and Brent and enjoying the snow and mountains in my home state.  Our second night at Snowshoe, the now young man, I have mentored since he was 8 (now 20!) joined us.  Oh how I enjoy are time together and being the best role model I can be for him.  The clock in our condo had a dead battery, there was paneling on the walls, and it was...well...dated!  Every time we would look to see what time it was, we would discover that it was still "11:13!"  This quickly became our key phrase of the weekend and answer for almost everything!
The view of the mountains (and ski slope) from our condo.

Me and Callie-Gator (as her dad calls her)
In February, I made my first trip of the year home to visit my family.  There was a benefit dinner for my friends who lost their 3 year old daughter and mother in an auto accident the Friday before Christmas.  I enjoyed spending time with them and seeing how well little Callie was recovering.

Baby Jase, me, & Brody
I also got to visit with 2 of my nephews.  It was my very first time meeting my newest nephew, Jase.  It was definitely love when I finally got to see and hold him.

My nieces couldn't wait to teach me how to "properly" make a snow angel.  Paige gave me specific instructions and it was a blast!
"First, you have to put on your snow clothes.  Next, you go outside, lay down in the snow and start moving your arms and legs back in forth REALLY fast.  Last you get up and you have a snow angel!"  It was great fun and my older sister has it on video.

In March, I went to Washington, D.C. with some of my Richmond friends for the National ShamrockFest.  There were a lot of great bands and I think fun was had by all. Friday night, we went to a pub where my AKPsi brother was DJing.  It was great to see him and catch up with a college friend.

Below is a photo I took of one of my favorite bands at ShamrockFEST.  Niko Naow is the lead singer.  This band was a lot of fun...and they even had a kilt competition...if you know what I mean! ;)

In April, my family came to visit me for Easter.  This marked my 3rd year hosting Easter.  We usually do the non-traditional meal for Easter and do a cookout.  On Saturday, we went to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.  It was a long day and there weren't a lot of animals out and about, unfortunately.  Brooke and Paige enjoyed riding the metro and seeing our National Capital.  I always enjoy incorporating learning with fun experiences.

As one of our traditions, we always go to BassPro when my family comes to visit.  My nieces love looking at the fish, looking a fishing poles, etc.  Paige was slightly concerned that this Grizzly might "get her", but Brooke convinced her that it wouldn't and they posed for a quick picture.
I also went "home" in April.  It was such a great weekend at home and was very hard to leave.  I spent as much time as I could playing with my nieces and nephews.  I also saw how much work needs to be done on my property in WV.  There never seems to be enough time to do everything.  Currently, I feel that spending as much quality time with my family and friends is where I need to have my focus.

Brooke, Paige, and Brody...being silly!

In May, I headed to Virginia Beach to play in the Governor's Cup Volleyball Tournament.  Saturday was cool and windy.  Unfortunately, one of the guys my team played against early Saturday morning had a heart attack and passed away.  It was such a hard thing to watch/experience.

There were MANY activities going on that weekend in VA Beach.  One of the activities that interested me was the car show on the board walk.  One of my favorite past time activities is going to car shows.  I even found my all time dream car!  1969 Stingray Corvette, blue, 4 speed on the floor!  I was infatuated!

I went back "home" for Memorial Weekend.  My mom and I carried on my grandmothers tradition of decorating the graves.  My dad and nieces joined us as we visited my great-grandfather's grave at the National Cemetery in Point Marion, PA.  Brooke noticed that she shared a birthday with him.  We decorated graves in 3 different cemeteries.

Paige and her Monkey, Ruby
Paige broke her leg in May and has a cast on that goes just below her knee.  For a week or 2 she had to be carried... EVERYWHERE!  Thankfully she still fits in a stroller, but those don't work that well inside the house.  I treated her to a trip to Build-A-Bear.  However, the nearest one is in Pittsburgh, PA...1.5 hours away from my parents house!  The girls went to church with me at Chestnut Ridge Church and then we headed to South Hills Village Mall for Paige to make her stuffed Monkey, Ruby, who also has a cast.  The girls were excellent and I loved every minute with them!  We also ate at Red Robin, which was a first for them.  They enjoyed their food and we went over the states in the United States, some matching, and other activities on the children's menu.
Connor coloring
Memorial Day was spent visiting my great-aunt Erma.  She was mending some of my skirts/dresses for me and we enjoyed conversation.  I also visited with a couple from my parents church.  I had hoped to spend most of the day with my college roommate, Judi and her family.  I hadn't seen them in 15 months.  I was getting concerned that my nephew, Connor, would forget who I am.

He has grown SO much and is so smart!  He was coloring and telling me how blue is his favorite color.  I told him that blue is also my favorite color.  I hope to get to see him more frequently and for more than an hour at a time.

This Saturday, June 15th, I will board a plane to Port au Prince Haiti for a mission trip.  Prayers for travel safety, health, weather, etc. are greatly appreciated.  I also pray that God uses us to his glory to bless the Haitians and full time missionaries while we are there.  I will be keeping a journal of my/our experiences while I am there.  I am unsure of internet access while I am there, so I might not be posting anything until I return.

Thanks for reading and God Bless!
